Boris Johnson claims LONDON not Liverpool propelled The Beatles to worldwide stardom
- Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Boris Johnson has controversially claimed it was London, not Liverpool, that propelled The Beatles to worldwide fame. The Tory Mayor of London, who already has a chequered history with Merseyside, has provoked the ire of Liverpudlians with his statement.

Speaking at the London School of Economics, in a speech entitled "London, the gateway to Britain," he said: "The greatest band in the world came from Liverpool, but in the end they recorded their stuff in London and it was London that helped propel them around the world. Johnson has previously issued an apology and visited the city over comments made in a 2004 Spectator article about Liverpool FC fans involved in the Hillsborough disaster. He caused outrage when the magazine he edited wrongly claimed “drunken fans” had played a part in the  disaster. The same article claimed Liverpool people “wallow” in their “victim status”, following the murder and beheading of contractor Ken Bigley in Iraq. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson told the Mirror: “This is becoming a bore now from Boris. “It’s yet another gaffe from him about Liverpool. He’s been forced to apologise before over Hillsborough and Ken Bigley, and he’s got this very wrong too.

Lennon Statue In Havana Now Has A 95-Year-Old Guardian
- Monday, December 09, 2013

John Lennon needed help. At least his statue did. A bronze likeness of the Beatle, who was assassinated 33 years ago Sunday, was inaugurated in a leafy Havana park 13 years ago. But souvenir-seekers kept stealing the iconic circular spectacles that adorned it. Officials tried gluing them on. But they should have known better: Vandals simply broke them off.

The Beatles 50 Years Ago Today :

The Beatles 50 Years Ago Today : Sunday, December 15, 1963

Alpha Television Studios, Aston, Birmingham

Following its success with the June 29th all-Liverpool edition of Lucky Stars (Summer Spin), ABC' Television this day shot a second such programme for the main series Thank Your Lucky Stars. All of the acts were Merseysiders, and Cavern Club compere Bob Wooler appeared as part of the reular "Spin-A-Disc" record review section. Taped in Aston during the afternoon, it was transmitted on Saturday, December 21st, from 5:50 to 6:35 pm.

Making their English TYLS appearance of the year (counting the two Summer Spot editions), the Beatles mimed to four songs, the most they had performed on this show to date, "I want to hold your hand", "All my loving", "Twist and Shout", and "She loves you". They were also presented, on camera, with two more gold discs to add to their quickly growing collection.

This edition was selected as ITV's official entry in the next annual International Contest For Television Light Entertainment Programmes, held in Montreux, Switzerland, in April 1964, but it did not win.
