The Beatles - A Day in The Life: July 13, 1965 (Tuesday)

Savoy Hotel, The Strand, London

Paul went this lunchtime to the Savoy Hotel in centtral London to collect from Sir Billy Butlin, five Ivor Novello Awards on behalf of the Beatles. He arrived late, however, having forgotten about the event, while John - also supposed to attend - failed to show at all. The entire luncheon, including Paul's acceptance of the awards and his thank-you speech, was filmed by Rediffusion TV cameras.

Buckingham Palace announces that the Beatles are to be awarded the MBE (Members of the British Empire) award by Queen Elizabeth II, an award traditionally only presented to upper-crust members of the community. The press embargo restricting publication of the Queen's Birthday Honours list was lifted during the evening, to allow the next day's newspapers to carry the news.

The Beatles were nominated for the award by prime minister Harold Wilson, who was also member of parliament for Huyton, Merseyside. It was widely seen as an attempt by Wilson to appear in touch with the younger generation, although at the time the voting age was 21.

McCartney was interviewed by Ronald Burns on the telephone for the BBC radio show Late Night News Extra, which also carried an interview between Epstein and the BBC's Peter Haigh. The programme was broadcast that night between 10.35pm and 11.30pm.

With the European tour ending, these words were spoken in Anthology by Paul McCartney recalling the tour,

"I remember playing a big bullring in Barcelona, the Plaza de Toros, where the Lord Mayor had great seats and all the rich people had seats but the kids, our real audience, were outside. We used to get upset about that: 'Why are we playing to all these bloody officials? We should be playing to the people outside. Let them in...' But of course they wouldn't."
