Like Under the Ivy, his much-acclaimed study of Kate Bush, the title of the latest music biography by the Edinburgh-based writer Graeme Thomson promises revelation.
While fresh gen on any Beatle is difficult to unearth and would be hard to quantify without scaling the Everest of pertinent books already published, one can certainly affirm that George Harrison: Behind the Locked Door is an insightful, rigorous and beautifully written atomisation of the youngest Beatle’s life. Timed to coincide with what would have been the year of Harrison’s 70th birthday, the book is affectionate, but never hagiographic. Thomson airs myriad acute quotes from scores of fresh interviewees, and as he maps Harrison’s path from Liverpool to Allahabad, India, where the guitarist’s ashes were strewn after he succumbed to lung cancer in 2001 at the age of 58.
A Cumbrian man who sold bootleg albums of Beatles music has been jailed. Paul Parkin was charged after police and trading standards officers raided his home in West View, Alston, following a tip-off by the British Recorded Music Industry Limited.
Bootleg vinyl LPs and illegal copies of music CDs were recovered. At an earlier hearing the 57-year-old pleaded guilty to 23 offences. The judge at Carlisle Crown Court sentenced him to four months in jail. Ten of the charges Parkin admitted were specimen counts of attempting to distribute vinyl records, with the other 13 being counts of possession of goods with intent to cause loss to another.

A piece of wood with John Lennon's original lyrics to 'Sexy Sadie' is being sold at auction. Lennon originally wrote the song in 1968 to attack Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the guru who had introduced the Beatles to Transcendental Meditation. Lennon felt the maharishi had behaved inappropriately towards some of the women traveling with The Beatles and wanted to cash in on the band's endorsement.
As The Times reports, the song's original lyrics opened with the line: "Maharishi what have you done, you’ve made a fool of everyone," causing a rift in the band. George Harrison eventually persuaded Lennon to change the lyrics on the grounds that the maharishi would sue for libel before its appearance on 'The Beatles' (aka 'The White Album').

When Capitol Records released “The Beatles Live at the BBC” to great fanfare in 1994, Beatles collectors lamented that the two-disc set barely scratched the surface of the vast trove of recordings the band made for the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965.
Many of those radio recordings were already on a 10-disc bootleg set, after all, and in the 19 years since then, bootleggers have come up with another three discs’ worth of material. But Capitol and Apple, the Beatles’ own label, are determined to catch up. “On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2,” another two discs, will be released Nov. 11. It will include 63 tracks, including 40 songs and 23 spoken segments, with interviews, introductions and studio banter. A remastered version of the 1994 set will be released at the same time.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono are making their way to campus — in art form that is. Not only will Virginia Tech be screening “The U.S. vs. John Lennon,” on campus, but “My Mommy is Beautiful,” an exhibit by Ono, will be on display at the Armory Gallery.
Lennon, whose anti-war remarks, “Nothing will stop me. I’ll always say what I feel,” served as the basis of the 2006 documentary, which highlights the Vietnam War. Tech’s School of Visual Arts will be hosting the upcoming event, screening “The U.S. vs. John Lennon,” in the Graduate Life Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. Despite the film being released over six years ago, the concerns about anti-war protestors and government surveillance remain prevalent issues today.

In case you were wondering if Paul McCartney, Beatle, has still got it, there’s this video of him just a-messin’ around with his new song, “New.” The video was posted on McCartney’s YouTube page, with the following explanation:
“Last month, whilst getting ready to go on stage at Regina, Paul was caught on camera performing an impromptu version of ‘New’. This quickly turned into an acoustic performance when Paul was joined by the rest of his band for a run-through the song.” Whether that was actually an “impromptu” performance or not (are there just hi-def cameras that follow Macca around before every show?) it’s still charming as all get up in a very Ram-y kind of way.

I feel I am back in the 60s, in a packed Batley Variety Club, tucking into the ubiquitous chicken in a basket, watching the stars of the day. But no, this is 2013 and I’m at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre with a meal in front of me that Jamie Oliver would be proud to have cooked (sea bass with all the trimmings) and a night of Beatles music to follow on stage. No other theatre offers anymore.
The musical is ‘Lennon’, the story of the ex-Beatle told in the words of his songs, performed by a first rate live band and accompanied by backdrop of clips from photographs and newsreels of the time. The show was a big West End and off-Broadway hit in the 1980s and has now been revived by director, Bob Eaton. John Power, of The La’s and lead singer of Cast, plays the older Lennon magnificently, but looking as much like John Denver as John Lennon although Tom Connor bears a remarkable resemblance to a baby-faced Paul
As inventor Flint Lockwood returns to the island of Swallow Falls to save the world again! he'll be doing it to the brand "new" beat from Paul McCartney as his single, "New," will be featured in the film.
"New," which is produced by Mark Ronson and now available for sale as a digital download, is the title track from McCartney's forthcoming "New" album, set for release on October 14 thin the UK and October 15 thin the US. Lia Vollack, president of Worldwide Music for Sony Pictures, said, "We're thrilled and honored to have Paul's infectious and inspiring song in the film. Only the most hardcore Beatles fans probably know the name Freda Kelly. They may have even received a letter from her. From the early 1960s through the band's dissolution in 1970, Kelly served as the Beatles' fan-club secretary. Fifty years later, she's finally telling her story with the documentary "Good Ol' Freda."
"When my grandson came along, I decided I wanted to do something," Kelly told HuffPost Entertainment about the impetus for the film. "Because over the years, I haven't done anything at all. I had actually six offers to do books, but I managed to shake them off. I sort of said, 'Oh, too many books out there [about The Beatles].' My grandson was the push I needed."

Doncaster’s crumbling St James’ Leisure Centre is to shut for good - unless £2 million can be found to make it safe. Leisure bosses have announced today that the doors of the Grade II listed building will remain shut and staff will be redeployed to other leisure centres in the town.
And with neither the Trust which runs the venue or Doncaster Council having the cash available for repairs, the building, which dates from 1932 and which once played host to a concert by The Beatles, now faces an uncertain future. Condition surveys have identified the requirement for a minimum of £2million worth of capital investment to make the venue safe for public use.

A rare photo book signed by Beatles legend John Lennon has reportedly sold on eBay. The book, a copy of Lennon's book In His Own Write, appeared on the auction site earlier this month and quickly racked up 46 bids, totaling out at $5,600.
The book was published in 1964 via Simon and Schuster and features a collection of short stories, photos, collages and anecdotes from Lennon. It was, in fact, the first solo material of any sort released by any of the Beatles, according to Ultimate Classic Rock.

"I was very sad to hear that my good friend David Frost passed away recently. I have known David for many years. "We first met when he was doing a stand up comedy routine in the London night club Quaglinos. I also went to see him at The Blue Angel in London and we bumped into each other at many social events during the ‘Swinging 60s’.
He interviewed me several times, most recently for the Al Jazeera Network. He was always a most interesting interviewer and, as history has proven, had many famous encounters such as the Frost / Nixon series of interviews."On a personal level I send my deepest sympathies to his lovely wife Carina and their three sons Miles, Wilfred and George, who I first remember when they came downstairs during a party to say good night wearing rather stunning striped pyjamas!
